Bangladesh breaks India’s unbeaten record in the Asia Cup

India women’s cricket team failed to maintain their unbeaten record in the ACC Women’s Asia Cup tournament. Women in Blue were handed their first ever defeat in this regional competition on June 6, 2018, putting an end to their 34-match winning streak. They were beaten by Bangladesh women’s cricket team by seven wickets in the group stage.

It was not only Bangladesh’s first ever victory against India but also the former champions’ first ever defeat in women’s Asia Cup history. Prior to this match, they did not experience any defeat, hence winning their previous six titles in a row. With this victory, Women in Green also registered their first victory against India in a women’s international cricket match.
Batting first, India scored 141 for the loss of 7 wickets, captain Harmanpreet Kaur top-scoring with 42 runs off just 37 deliveries while Deepti Sharma scored 32 runs. Rumana Ahmed took 3 wickets giving 21 runs while Salma Khatun claimed 1 wicket.
Coming to chase, Bangladesh batters reached the target with 2 balls remaining at hand. Depending on Fargana Haque’s 46-ball 52 and Rumana Ahmed’s unbeaten 42 runs off 34 balls, Bangladesh won the match by seven wickets. They shared a 93-run unbroken fourth wicket partnership. For India, Pooja Vastrakar, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Poonam Yadav took one wicket each.
However, India also failed to defend their title after being beaten by Bangladesh by three wickets in the final match. Bangladesh became only the second team to win the Asia Cup title after India. India made it to the Asia Cup final seventh consecutive time while Bangladesh did it for the first time.
The 7th edition of the ACC Women’s Asia Cup, which consisted of Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Malaysia and Thailand, was organized in Malaysia. Matches were played between 3 and 10 June 2018 in two venues- Kinrara Academy Oval, Kuala Lumpur and Royal Selangor Club, Kuala Lumpur.
