Venue of the 2018 Asia Cup has been moved
from India to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after Pakistan’s objection to play
in India. Now, the tournament will be organized in the UAE from September 13 to
28. Despite the change of the venue, it will still be considered a home series
for India.
India was supposed to host the 14th
edition of the tournament, but Pakistan expressed their disapproval citing the
non-issuance of visa to athletes of other sports. The decision of shifting the venue
was taken in the annual general meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC)
after Pakistan’s reservations on organizing the tournament in India.
The ACC’s decision of holding the Asia
Cup in the UAE will come as assistance for Pakistan as they have been using the
country as their home venue and organizing all their home series as well as their
domestic T20 tournament, Pakistan Super League (PSL), in Sharjah and Dubai as
well.
Six Asian teams, including five full
members and a qualifier, will compete in this contest. Five full members are
Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan while the sixth team
will be decided via a play-off that will include Hong Kong, Nepal, Singapore,
Malaysia, UAE and Oman.
India is the defending champion. In
2016, they won the trophy after beating Bangladesh.
