At the time of Langland’s writing this poem, man lost his way and strayed away from the path of religion. Most of the men did not follow the religion. Those who were priests did not follow the true religion, and instead of serving people, they oppressed people. On the other hand, government officials did not protect people rather made them suffer. It was not that ordinary people lived in poor conditions. They also did not follow the religion. As a result, there was instability in society.
William Langland used to believe that by following the path of religion, human beings can achieve true freedom. Every man should know how to protect his soul. For this, the first most important thing is Truth. Truth is very important because it teaches us that God is our creator and Jesus Christ showed us the way to freedom. So, we should love the truth and protect it all time. Valiant warriors should protect the truth and they should not be afraid of sacrificing their lives for its protection.
We must believe in Jesus Christ and should listen to his words closely. Faith is very important because when we believe in someone, we listen to him and try to follow his advice. If men stop believing in Jesus Christ, they will not listen to his words. We should strongly believe in god and make sure that we do not lose our faith. It is not just to believe that God is our creator, but he told us to follow the path of good and we should focus on following his advice.
Obedience is another quality we should keep in mind. Lucifer had many qualities, but he was not obedient to God. Hence, Lucifer and his followers disobeyed God for which God punished them. So, we should grow the habit of becoming obedient towards God. We should learn from the mistakes of Lucifer. Lucifer was arrogant and there are many human beings who are arrogant just like Lucifer. In his arrogance, Lucifer forgot that God is the best and we should not do such kind of thing. We should obey God and we all should be modest.
If a human being wants to save his soul, he should know how to love. He should love God, Jesus Christ, human beings and other creatures. This love is a very important quality. When we say love, many of us think of love between a man and woman, but Langland did not focus on that kind of love. He focused on loving God. When we will love God, we will try to walk on his path and only then God will love us, and when God will become happy, our souls will be saved. Langland also emphasized honesty. We should be honest and do honest work. We should keep in mind if we become dishonest, there will be instability in society. Hence, we should earn money by honest means.
We should also think about the poor. Even if we live in good condition, we should not forget about poor people. There are many people in our society who suffer. We should help such people and support them all the time. If we do so then God will be satisfied with us. All men are created by God. When we help the poor, God will be happy. Langland focused on two things- faith and deed. We should not only have faith in God but we must do good work. Then we will achieve our true freedom.
