Tahmina Rahman: An educated nut seller

She is dressed in jeans and shirt and headphone on her ears. That is why, everyone thinks that the girls is selling nuts as a hobby. But Tahmina Rahman does not consider any work as inferior and she wants to tell the youth that thing.
Many people do not want to believe that I am a nut seller. Some people think that I am selling nuts to raise funds for any person or any organizations. Then I tell them, ‘I have come here to help myself and I want to do something.’ She also said, ‘I extensively notice a thing among youth. They do not respect all jobs equally. I want to change this concept. Selling nut is not my profession, but if you have a will, you can do all kinds of work. You can utilize your leisure time in an excellent way. Tahmina said such thing. Therefore, she is selling nuts by herself to break the notion.’
This girl is often seen in the afternoon in Dhanmondi’s Rabindra Sarobar and surrounding areas. She has a bag on her back and a medium sized bamboo basket hanging on her neck. She is selling nuts in small packets. After her college hours, she goes out with nuts. When her friends do hangout, she utilizes her time this way. Tahmina studies in Lalmatia Girls’ College. She is the third-year student of management department. Everyone calls her in the name ‘Kotha’. She got the opportunity to go to Malaysia for higher education after passing higher secondary examination. But Kotha did not want to leave the country. She used to do a job in a travel agency while she was a student. But she did not like the obligations of the job. She felt herself like a robot for having to follow the strict schedule of office hours. She did not think herself independent. Tahmina does not think that there is a difference between the jobs of nut selling and travel agency. Both works are great to him.
How did this idea come to her mind? She said, ‘I read an article about Taijul Islam Lekhon. Despite being a son of an aristocratic family, he sells goods roaming on the streets. There, he gave a hint about selling nuts. Then I decided to get to this work.’
Her college friends also take her profession positively. She will not go out with her bucket in the month of this Ramadan. But some friends will be with her when she will go out after the Ramadan. Tahmina said, ‘Many people talk many things about my work, but ninety-five percent are positive. It increases my courage. But some say that I have come here to destroy the earnings of other nut sellers or doing this job to get the attention of others. It is not right. I want to tell everyone that we can sell nuts beside study. Government is spending lots of money for education. Those who are selling nuts today, they can do it in a more sophisticated way if they become educated. It is possible if they study, ideas are created in a better way. The difference between me and the nut seller is aesthetics.’
She buys nuts from Saturia, per kilogram costs Tk 80-90. She fries and selects nuts carefully by herself at home. Afterwards, she put nuts in the hands of the customers in a beautiful black-colored paper bag. She earns around Tk 250 within few hours. She does not give importance to the income. To her, it is important to do something in life. She said, ‘Bangladesh is a small country, it is not possible to get big jobs. So, it is best to concentrate on any work leaving all frustrations. Many people resolve to become doctor or engineer. As a result, not everyone’s dream comes true. They become frustrated. Many of them choose the path of wrongdoing, such as theft and robbery. But to keep oneself happy in any work is the personal achievement. We should give equal importance to all works while not sitting idly. But Kotha does not know what she will do in the future. Every work is just work to her. She will definitely do something which will define herself.’
