Significance of tower and dungeon: Truth and Wrong in Piers Plowman

In Book 1 of “Piers Plowman”, there is the mention of a tower, which symbolizes heaven. It is a place where good people can stay for their good deeds and receive rewards for their deeds. Not only good people but also God stays in heaven. The sad thing is that most people want to enjoy the luxury of this world, and they forget about the afterlife. Those who think about their death and life after death and try to remain honest can go and live in the tower.

Heaven is also the place where truth dwells. It is an allegory. In reality, truth is God or the father of the faith. God created us and gave us five senses so that we can worship him. He provided us with all the necessary elements such as animals and trees so that we can use them and live on this earth. He also gave us some advice, and we use the gifts of God to save ourselves from the cold. We drink water to quench our thirst and eat food when we become hungry. Unfortunately, people do not want to walk on the path of God. They become greedy and want to lead a life of pomp and luxury, which brings them nothing but suffering.

Those who walk on the path of evil live in the castle, which symbolizes hell. There people do not get any comfort. It is a castle of sorrow and life over there is full of suffering. During their time on earth, people do not think about these things and this makes their lives miserable. William Langland tried to tell the readers that we should remain honest throughout our lives so that we are not sent to this castle and let God help and protect us. The evil in our heart lures us to follow the path of evil, and when we listen to our inner evil, we walk on the path of evil.

Lucifer is the leader of Satan. He is the father of falsehood, and in this poem, his symbol is wrong. “Wrong” is Lucifer. He himself becomes bad first and then lures Adam and Eve to walk on the path of evil. He is responsible for all the evil on earth. Lucifer hates human beings. Hence, he always tries to lure human beings to become evil. Human beings should follow the path of God to protect themselves from Lucifer and pray to God. If they pray to God regularly then they will not suffer, and they will have peace in their lives.

Both the Tower and Dungeon are very important subjects. These two symbolize “Truth” and “Wrong.” In this world, “Truth” represents the path of good, and “Wrong” represents evil or falsehood. Walking on the path of truth, we will find God, and walking on the path of wrong, we will find Lucifer. So, we all should walk on the path of Good and pray to God. If we pray to God regularly and love God and remain honest then we will achieve freedom in our afterlife. This what Langland repeatedly said to his readers. He said that if we remain busy in our worldly life to acquire wealth, it will do us no good. Our honesty will save us.
